The Health Benefits of Drinking Orange Pekoe Tea

The term “orange pekoe” refers to any medium-grade black tea with leaves of a specific size. These tea varieties originate from Sri Lanka and India and may include leaf buds as well as young tea leaves. Like many types of black tea, the health benefits of drinking orange pekoe are plenty. This delicate blend is thought to boast a range of perks for those who consume it regularly and in moderation.

HIGH ANTIOXIDANT LEVELS

While green tea is touted for its antioxidant properties, some studies suggest that black tea is just as effective at delivering the protective effects of these compounds. Antioxidants’ main job is to prevent damage from unstable free radical molecules and keep the body healthy at a cellular level. Since free radical damage is a normal part of everyday life, it follows that tea may be a beneficial part of a daily health regimen.

DISEASE FIGHTING POTENTIAL

Thanks to its high level of antioxidants, food science scholars believe orange pekoe tea and its fellow black tea varieties may be able to combat or perhaps contribute to the prevention of cancer. Studies of the polyphenols found in tea have shown that a particular compound called TF-2 can actually slow the growth of cancerous cells. Antioxidants also work to thwart damage to cellular DNA so that no mutations are replicated and new cells are healthy when they're formed.

BOOSTS HEART HEALTH

Many people suffer from a condition called endothelial dysfunction, which may be an underlying cause of heart disease. In one study, regular consumption of black teas including orange pekoe varieties was shown to be able to reverse this condition, thus potentially lowering the risk of developing cardiovascular problems. In addition, black tea contains polyphenol and flavonoid compounds, which may reduce overall risk of death from heart disease.

WORKS WITH ANTIBIOTICS

In one study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, black tea was shown to complement the effects of antibiotics when working against common intestinal infections. The same study reported that black tea is just as effective as green when it comes to combating microbial infections.
